Howdy Y'All!
In my desire to better communicate my visual ideas I have been working towards, for a long time, what I have been doing now as Character Reference Sheets. It has, definitely taken me a while to get to this point and I am CERTAIN (even if you say otherwise) that i have improved since I started on dA (but that is a matter for another journal).

I have drawn 4 of these ref sheets, but onloy two have been posted on devArt (the other two are for a project I am still keeping kind of "undercovers")and I, as usual, haven't gotten much feedback on them at all. Now, this is a bit of a pain in the arse for me, because the primary reason for me to do these character sheets is to communicate my visual ideas to other artists who would better be able to technically draw them well.

Now, The ones I have up so far are these:

What I am looking for here is critical opinion on how well this style of design sheet (with included height and weight and rear view and such) helps you, as an artist, draw these characters better than just a regular front view of the character would and, without having to draw a sideview (as I am yet rather shitty at that) what I could do to maybe make it better.

I cannot think of any way to get a better critique on how well this helps you draw the designs than for you to actually draw them, so I'm sorry if you feel like I am just asking for free art.

I just posted a new character ref sheet:

Oh wow, when did you do these? I don't even remember seeing them.

Well, the first two (for El Aguila) were up around February-ish. The one for Mega rider was put up...hrm, last week.
:iconladyju-san:
Oh wow. February...ish so long ago! 0__0 *gasp*! Last week isn't too bad. But I wonder why I didn't notice it? Maybe I'm blind! Uh no!

But I think the way you have them is very nice. I especially like that you went to the trouble to actually draw just a headshop of El Aguila instead of just keeping it at the whole body shot, you know? And I like that you did the back of the body shot too. I couldn't do that very well when I tried to do a reference. You succeeded.

Thank You.
I felt, very strongly, that a solo Mask Reference was necessary to show how it lies on his head, and to disspell the constant error wherein people have been drawing it like its a hat that sits on the top of his head and not like it is a mask that goes under his chin and all.

When you were trying to do a reference, was that your goal from the outset?
:iconladyju-san:
You're welcome. ^ ^

I always thought it was a mask that went under his chin and such. That's how I always pictured it whenever I saw a picture of him. I think it's awesome that way, anyway. I mean...a hat would look kind of...well...strange. :XD:

Mm...someone asked me to do a reference of my character. I only did the frontal view, though.

Problem with only doing the full frontal (:P) is that it leaves an entire half of your design entirely up for interpretation which could result in both frustration to when something is drawn wrong and frustration to an artist who is stuck making up what the back of a character looks like.
:iconladyju-san:
Very true. But I don't think it was really ever put to use. So I don't think it ended up mattering, really. :XD:
